NVYFL Youth Football Rules — 2026
Reflects the 2026 NFHS rules year. Built from the 2026 NVYFL 5/6 Rulebook and the 2026 NVYFL 7/8 Game Rules. Last checked August 27, 2026.
Verify against the current rule book and VPA guide before teaching this as authoritative.
The Northern Vermont Youth Football League publishes a separate rule set for each tackle level. Both supplement the NFHS football rules book rather than replace it: anything the league does not address is played by NFHS rule.
The league's own documents: 5/6 Tackle Rules (PDF, 10 pages) and 7/8 Tackle Rules (PDF, 8 pages). Everything below is transcribed from those two files; where a transcription and the PDF disagree, the PDF governs.
Two notes on how this page reproduces the league documents. The wording of every rule is the league's own, transcribed from the 2026 PDFs. The outline lettering has been regularised where the source PDFs broke their own numbering — the 2026 5/6 document renumbers section 3 as 1/1.1/1.2 and section 4 as A/B with mismatched sub-items — so the two levels and the two years can be read side by side. Section numbers are unchanged and remain citable.
What changed from 2025
Ten changes at 5/6 and nine at 7/8. Everything not listed here is carried forward from 2025 word for word.
5/6 Tackle
| Section | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 — Coaches | Background verifications required; nothing said about who reviews them | Adds "Background checks will be reviewed by the Executive Board" |

Each 5/6 team plays the opponent of its 7/8 team's first-round game, and the 5/6 season ends there. Anything after that is arranged by the teams themselves — the league appoints no officials |
7/8 Tackle
| Section | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| 3 — Coaches | Certifications due at the League Jamboree, before and after the deadline | Both references become the League Weigh In. Adds "Background checks will be reviewed by the Executive Board" |

| 15.b — Distance the kick must travel | The kick must clear the receiving team's 25-yard line | The kick must clear the 25-yard line in the air to be returned. "In the air" is added to both failed-attempt clauses as well |
| 15.b — Re-kick after a kick out of bounds | The ball is placed at the 30-yard line | The ball is placed at the 35-yard line. The second-failed-attempt spot stays at the 30 |
Unchanged in both rule sets

- After a safety, the team that scores will get the ball on their own 25-yard line.
16. Playoffs
League members unanimously voted to incorporate a playoff and championship format for the 5 / 6 Tackle Program. This is considered a trial and transitional approach to identify how an extended season is managed and received. The implementation of a Championship DOES NOT change the fact that the 5 / 6 Tackle level remains to be an instructional level for new tackle players. This introduction must be handled professionally with the focus remaining on player safety, sportsmanship and appropriate participation for all players.
Playoff format:
- 5/6 playoffs have been eliminated for 2026.
- Each 5/6 team will play the opponent of the first round playoff match up of the 7/8 team.
- Once that first round playoff game is completed the 5/6 season is completed.
- If teams want to schedule a jamboree, scrimmage or unofficial league game after the first round of the 7/8 playoffs, teams are allowed to do so on their own.
- Logistics of competition for 5/6 will be handled by participating teams and not the league. Game officials will not be appointed to contest.
